How difficult can it be to change a bulb?
Noticed that the passenger side dipped headlight bulb had gone on my 2000 Ford Mondeo on my way back from football on Thursday. Not a problem I thought, just pop down to Halford’s, get a bulb and jobs a good ‘un. Unfortunately Ford thought this was far too easy!!
Popped the bonnet to change the bulb and noticed that there is about 1/2 inch clearance between the back of the headlight and the battery and it’s holder. Quick look at the Haynes manual and it dawned that this could take a bit longer. The steps for this small job are as follows:
- Remove front grill
- Remove headlight unit
- Replace bulb
- Refit headlight unit
- Refit front grill
Marvellous I think and start googling for any alternatives. Turns out this is the only way and plenty of people are ranting about it on the web!! So I get my tools and armed with the Haynes manual head out to the car. 15 minutes later and the jobs done. OK, so it is a bit of a pain, but at the end of the day it is five screws and not that much effort. Must admit that I have never felt such achievement from changing a bulb, but I think this has been blown out of all proportion!!
I’m glad I took this on, mainly due to me refusing to pay a garage to change a bulb! Next time I do this I will put some instructions on the web with pictures, which should make this appear much less scary.
