Time scale for completing CCNP

Whilst looking through the Cisco Learning Network I came across a rather interesting post, which raised an issue I was not totally aware of. Turns out that you have 3 years from the date of passing your first exam to complete the CCNP track.

The actual criteria is that exams are valid for 3 years from the date of completion, so if I get into gear properly I have until the beginning of 2010 to complete both my CCNP and CCDP!

Thought this might be a useful fact for other people following a similar path.

Old Trafford

After my best mate managed to get tickets for the England friendly, we headed off to Manchester to the rather impressive Old Trafford. The match was against Spain, so all were hoping for a good match. For a different view of Old Trafford, check out Google Maps.

DLoad, download tracker for Wordpress

After writing my fGalleryTags plugin for WordPress I wanted to see how many downloads I get on it’s zip file. I searched around, but could not find anything that did what I wanted, so I decided to start work on my second plugin, DLoad.

By adding a [dload] tag to your post/page you will get something similar to this:

Download version 0.1: DLoad (128)

The DLoad box can be customised by editing the stylesheet, to allow it to better reflect the style of your site.

fGalleryTags, adding fGallery images to posts

After installing the wonderful fGallery plugin I was rather dissapointed that I could not insert the images into my posts. I had a play with using PHP to insert the images, but this got very messy, very quickly.

“There must be an easier way?” I thought, so I set about seeing how these plugins work. Using the SimpleTags plugin as a guide I set to work on fGalleryTags.

Following a small amount of cursing I manage to get the plugin working. It turns out that the Wordpress plugins are not quite as difficult as I first thought. The Wordpress API works very well and allows you to add in filters for content easily.

The result of this has been the development of fGalleryTags. fGalleryTags works by allowing the user to enter an [fGallery] tag into a post, where an fGallery image thumbnail is needed. An example of the thumbnail produced is shown on the left. Clicking on the image will then take the reader to the Album containing this image.

In an effort to try and get more traffic to codo I have decided to tryout Technorati. This works by allowing you to tag certain words in your blog, so that people can find these when searching on Technorati. Think of it as a Google for blogs.

This may seem a bit of a strange idea, but it shuld work very well. As blogs are constantly changing, Technorati can also offer feeds of changes and allows you to find other people’s views on almost any subject.

Technorati describe themselves as:

Technorati is the recognized authority on what’s happening on the World Live Web, right now. The Live Web is the dynamic and always-updating portion of the Web. We search, surface, and organize blogs and the other forms of independent, user-generated content (photos, videos, voting, etc.) increasingly referred to as “citizen media.”

White Hart Lane

Went and saw Tottenham Hotspur verses Middlesborough at White Hart Lane today. Always a good atmosphere at The Lane, but a few empty seats as it was a mid-week game. For a different view of White Hart Lane, check out Google Maps

Tottenham always looked to be the stronger team, but at half-time it was all square at 0-0. Spurs came back out for the second half with a renewed purpose. Dimitar Berbatov scored a wonderful goal to set them on their way. It did look like Middlesborough may get something out of the game when Robert Huth levelled on 80 minutes.

Martin Jol then made a change, which proved to be crucial. The Dutchman brought on Robbie Keane, who with only six minutes left unleashed an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box.

Tempers started to get a bit frayed and three minutes from time it all bubbled over. After a strong tackle on Aaron Lennon, players from both sides took offence and a pushing match developed. Both George Boetang and Didier Zokora where sent off for raised arms.

It finished 2-1 to Spurs, who deserved the victory.

Gallery Added

In a drive to add more content I have decided to add a gallery to codo. The gallery being used is fGallery as this seems to integrate with Wordpress rather well and is very small. As there is no need for some of the complex features other galleries offer, this appears to be the perfect solution.

As the gallery was added it seemed a shame to leave it empty, so I have added a few pictures to get started with.

Wordpress Upgrade to 2.0.5

Having decided to stay with Wordpress for a while, I thought it was about time to upgrade to version 2. This adds some extra features, including picture support. Searched the web and found the following article on upgrading, which worked very well, http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/upgrade2two/

All seemed to be going ok, until I tried to write a new post. The new post screen was blank and took ages to load. After some investigation I found this, http://wordpress.org/support/topic/72981. It appears that there can be some issues with MySQL tables not being set to auto_increment. This causes all sorts of problems and seems to put things into an infinate loop.

Everything is now up and working, but we have reverted to the default theme. I will now go and have a play and see how I get on.

External Hosting

To prepare for a future change of ISP and to reduce the admin overhead of Codo, it has been decided to outsource the hosting of Codo. After looking at the various options we have decided to use 1&1 for the hosting.

1&1 offer a good value package, with domain name hosting as well as content hosting.

New Associate - The Cats Whiskers

It gives me great pleasure to announce that codo.co.uk has completed it’s first external website project for the folks over at The Cats Whiskers.

The Cats Whiskers is the area’s newest boarding cattery situated in the quiet village of Wilstead, Bedfordshire. They offer luxury care for your cats when you take a holiday, a weekend break, move house, need hospital care or have to travel for business or family commitments. They accept long and short term boarders.

codo.co.uk was called in to design and implement a website to inform customers of the services available, as well as allow communication between customers and The Cats Whiskers.

This site is not just your normal static content. There is a regularly updated Gallery showing the building of the cattery, with pictures of current and previous guests.
